Game 2 Feb 28th:

SEATTLE -- (From the Eastside Journal) Roosevelt girls basketball coach Bill Resler said it would take ``a 10-hour essay'' to outline what Darnellia Russell means to the program. Since he didn't have half a day to spare, Resler went straight to the conclusion. ``Her spirit,'' said Resler, shortly after Russell's late-game magic held off Redmond in a 49-43 Roughriders victory Saturday night. ``She has the most spirit of anyone I've ever met. Her spirit carries us. At the end of the game, she put the team on her shoulders.'' Roosevelt (20-2) won its ninth game in a row and advanced to the 4A Kingco Conference title game against Garfield (20-2) at 6 p.m. Friday at Bellevue Community College. The Mustangs trailed most of the game, and by as many as 12 in the first half. But Redmond rallied and pulled to within two at 44-42 with 4:22 to go on Mackenzie Flynn's third 3-pointer in a 54-second span. Flynn and Erika Edwards both missed potential go-ahead 3-pointers before Flynn made one free throw to trim the Roughriders' lead to 44-43 with 1:23 to go.

At that point, with the outcome in doubt, Russell took over. The 5-foot-6 senior guard scored on a nifty drive, led a defensive stop that resulted in a shot-clock violation, made one free throw, rebounded her own missed free throw, stole a pass, and smiled bright enough to light up the whole gymnasium. And Russell pulled off that entire winning sequence in the final 54 seconds. ``I really wanted it,'' said Russell, who finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. ``I knew they wanted it, but we wanted it more. We went after loose balls, diving on the floor.'' On one pivotal trip down court late in the fourth quarter, Roosevelt held the ball for more than a minute, thanks to three offensive rebounds. Breianna Gaines added a team-best 14 points and Tracy Leddo finished with 11. The Roughriders, who often shot outside against the Mustangs' zone defense, scored almost half of their points (24) on 3-pointers. It was a typical Roosevelt performance: high energy, zero fear. Resler jumped up and down in the first half after a Leddo 3-pointer. The coach clapped, cheered throughout, even motioned to the fans for more noise.

Roosevelt improved to 2-0 against Redmond this season and has won eight of the last nine in the series. Roosevelt will play Friday for its fifth league title in seven years (champion in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002). The Mustangs (19-3), who have reached the state tournament five consecutive years, must win three loser-out games in a row to get back to Tacoma. First up for Redmond is Bothell (11-11) on Wednesday. The Mustangs improved on a 17-point loss to Roosevelt on Feb. 4, but still came up short. On Saturday, Redmond had 22 turnovers and was outrebounded by the shorter Roughriders, 33-27. Flynn scored a game-high 18 points and Claire Pallansch added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Mustangs. ``We don't like to lose, but we played to win tonight, rather than playing not to lose,'' Pallansch said. ``It's discouraging, but it gives us more incentive the next time. We need to stay optimistic.'' Redmond coach Pat Bangasser felt his team was a play or two away from a win. ``I was proud of the effort,'' he said. ``We had good energy. We were feisty tonight.  Our itinerary hasn't changed. We'll just have to go the long road.

Redmond - Tosti, Gillum 5, West, Pallansch 11, Radtke 2, Flynn 20, Betteridge 2,Edwards 5.
Roosevelt - Capeloto, Bouddy 3, Leddo 11, Gaines 14, Russell 12, Torrance 2, Evans 4, Muller, Kirkwood 1, Argens 2.

Roosevelt        10 16  8 15 - 49

Game 3 Mar 3rd:

SAMMAMISH -- (From the Eastside Journal) Looking for a way to rebound from a loss in its last game, the Redmond girls basketball team decided to ... well, rebound. The Mustangs controlled the caroms Wednesday night and defeated Bothell 55-45 in a loser-out 4A Kingco Conference tournament game at Eastlake. Redmond (20-3) advanced to play Lake Washington (16-6) at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Eastlake in another loser-out game. ``I thought we came out with intensity,'' said Mustangs senior post Claire Pallansch, who tallied team-highs with 16 points and 12 rebounds. ``We played hard and we played to win. One of our goals was rebounding. We worked on it in practice.'' Redmond shot 64 percent (7-for-11) in the second quarter-- many of which were open jump shots-- and built an 11-point lead.

Over the final two quarters, some stingy defense and an avalanche of offensive rebounds were the difference as the Mustangs maintained at least an eight-point cushion the rest of the way. Sophomore guard Erika Edwards added 14 points and junior point guard Mackenzie Flynn scored seven of her 10 points in the fourth quarter for Redmond. Mustangs coach Pat Bangasser said he was pleased with his team's shot selection, defense and the 33-24 rebound edge. Added Edwards, ``We helped each other all over the court. Our defense on their shooters was what we wanted it to be.''

Redmond, which has played in five consecutive state tournaments and has placed four straight years, must win two more games to get back to Tacoma. The Mustangs said it didn't take long for them to get over Saturday's semifinal loss to rival Roosevelt, which will play Garfield for the league title at 6 p.m. Friday at Bellevue Community College. ``Sure, we'd like to play for the Kingco championship. I'm not going to lie,'' Pallansch said. ``But if this is the way (through the loser's bracket) we have to go, then we'll try to make the most of it.'' Redmond improved to 14-3 all-time in the 4A Kingco tournament and 5-0 in elimination games. The Mustangs took the long road (three consecutive loser-out victories) to state in 2002. Taryn Kellogg scored 19 points, Julie Zubovic added 12 and Anna Denny had 10 for the Cougars, whose season ended at 11-12.

Redmond - Tosti, Petrie, Gillum 2, West 2, Pallansch 16, Radtke 7, Flynn 10, Betteridge 3, Olson 1, Edwards 14.
Bothell - Harder, Abed-Rabbo, Zubovic 12, Denny 10, Kellogg 19, Lockmon 2, Harris, Kalstad 2.

Redmond          13 17 10 15 - 55
Bothell          11 12  6 16 - 45

Game 4 Mar 5th:

SAMMAMISH -- (From the Eastside Journal) Redmond's Mackenzie Flynn didn't know about the Mustangs' perfect record in 4A Kingco tournament elimination games. Redmond defeated Lake Washington 57-45 in Friday's loser-out game and will play 6 p.m. today against Roosevelt at Bothell High School, for the league's second berth to the state tournament. The Roughriders (20-3) defeated Redmond 49-43 in the semifinals last weekend. With the win the Mustangs (21-3) improved to 15-3 all-time in the tournament and 6-0 in elimination games. ``That's news for me,'' Flynn said. ``We play every game the same way. We play to win.'' It was a big night for Flynn, who scored a game-high 19 points, including 3-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arch. She also had four steals, six assists and shot 8-for-9 from the free throw line. Redmond coach Pat Bangasser had nothing but praise for his junior, whose poise during the game he tabbed as key for the win. ``She has the best games under pressure,'' Bangasser said.

Redmond, which has played in the last five consecutive state tournaments and placed for four straight years, is one win away from returning to state. At the time when Friday's game ended, Redmond didn't know who they were going to play -- not that it mattered. ``Whoever we play,'' Flynn said. ``We are looking forward to it. ``We're just excited to be here.'' Though Lake Washington scored the first basket of the game, Redmond went on a 17-4 run to establish a lead midway through the second quarter that the Mustangs would never give up. Redmond led 24-12 at the half.

The Kangaroos (16-7) made a valiant effort in the second half to catch up with Redmond, and came within six, 42-36, with 3:30 left to play when Sara Dennehy sank a 3-pointer that ignited the fans. Dennehy finished with 15 points to pace Lake Washington. ``Our kids played as hard as they could,'' Lake Washington coach Steve Lowe said. ``I told them `don't have any regrets''' A case of nerves, a slow start and costly turnovers tripped the Kangaroos' hopes of extending the season. ``There was no point in the game when I was looking at the scoreboard and thought we were done,'' Lowe said. Claire Pallansch added nine points for Redmond and dominated the boards with 13 rebounds.

Redmond - Tosti, Ball, Petrie, Gillum, Fischel, West, Pallansch, Radtke, Flynn, Betteridge, Valentine, Olson, Edwards.
Lake Washington - Phippard , Ferguson, Fox, Dennehy, Johnston, Sacco, Hammond.

Redmond           9 15 16 17 - 57
Lake Washington   2 10 16 17 - 45

Game 5 :

BOTHELL-- (From the Eastside Journal) Their victory defied logic, a win even they struggled to comprehend. Using their trademark resiliency, the Roosevelt Roughriders held off Redmond 42-41 Saturday night at Bothell to earn 4A Kingco's No. 2 berth to this week's girls state tournament. Roosevelt (21-3) was held scoreless for a 6:27 stretch in the first half. The Roughriders were 0-for-11 from the field in the first quarter, didn't make their first field goal until the 9½ minutes into the game and trailed 14-2 at one point.

And those aren't the worst parts. Senior guard Darnellia Russell, Roosevelt's most important player, missed her first 10 shots. Russell, however, did give Roosevelt the lead for good at 40-37 via a three-point play (her only points of the game) with 1:38 left. The Mustangs, down 42-41, had one final opportunity with 11.9 seconds to go. As the seconds ticked down, junior point guard Mackenzie Flynn passed to an open teammate under the basket. Just before the pass arrived, Roughriders freshman Ariel Evans jumped in front to steal the pass with three seconds left. ``This team works together,'' Roosevelt coach Bill Resler said. ``They are resilient, like a pack of wolves. They fly everywhere. They totally buy into that pack mentality. ``As far as our resiliency, I knew that when the girls were down 14-2 I didn't need to call a timeout. That's how resilient they are.''

Resler also said he was going to give his players T-shirts with basketballs shaped like hearts for Wednesday's state-opener. Evans, who was given the game-ball afterward, finished with a team-high 11 points and five rebounds, Breianna Gaines added eight points and Mackenzie Argens grabbed eight rebounds. The Roughriders will make their ninth trip to the state tournament. They finished fifth in 2002. ``I'm so pumped, so happy,'' Russell said. ``We worked so hard. We couldn't get down when our shots weren't falling. We kept our hearts in it that we were going to win.''

The Mustangs (21-4) had their five-year state run, with four consecutive trophies, ended. Players cried and consoled each other long after the game was over. ``It's very tough, devastating,'' Redmond coach Pat Bangasser said. ``It's like getting punched in the stomach.' Flynn, who scored a game-high 17 points, was disappointed that Kingco, with three of the state's top-1 teams, only received two berths to state. ``It's not fair,'' she said. ``We're one of the best teams in the state and we can't go. But there's nothing you can do.''

Redmond - Tosti 2, Gillum 7, West, Pallansch 4, Radtke 2, Flynn 17, Betteridge 4, Edwards 5.
Roosevelt - Capeloto, Bouddy 2, Leddo 5, Gaines 8, Russell 6, Torrance 2, Evans 8, Mohler 3, Kirkwood 2, Argens 6.

Redmond          11 10  6 14 - 41
Roosevelt         2 17  9 14 - 42
