12 24 21 - 79 Return to Top or Mustangs Home Page Game 2 Summary: ISSAQUAH — The reigning KingCo 4A scoring champion never stopped coming at Issaquah, never gave the Eagles any room for error. Courtney Martin, with a smooth-as-jazz turnaround jumper and near perfection at the free-throw line, brought Redmond back in the second half, and Issaquah coach Kathy Gibson could not have asked for a better opening test. Right away, she discovered what her young team — only two seniors played Tuesday — would do under pressure. They held on. Again and again. The Eagles, ranked 10th in Class 4A, opened their girls basketball season with a 54-49 win against ninth-ranked Redmond, never giving up a big early lead. "We still have our kinks on offense, but our heart and defense really helped us out," said point guard Blaire Brady, who scored 10 points in her first Issaquah start. Brady was one of five Issaquah sophomores who played. The Eagles were without senior Alexa Smith, one of their top returning players, who was held out for academic reasons. But it didn't seem to matter early. Martin got in foul trouble three minutes in, and Issaquah finished the first quarter with a 16-5 run and led 22-7. "We started strong," Gibson said. "First game of the season, with all that youth, that really surprised me." The Eagles pressed from the start and forced 22 Redmond turnovers. "Issaquah played some awesome defense," Redmond coach Dennis Edwards said. "Talk about feisty. Issaquah was all over the place." Redmond (1-1, 0-1 KingCo 4A) outscored Issaquah 13-2 in the second quarter to cut the lead to 24-20, and then Martin got started. She scored 19 of her 26 points in the second half and made 14 of 15 free throws. But Redmond never got closer than two points, and Issaquah senior Erin Nicol scored seven of her 17 points in the fourth quarter. "I'm pretty darn proud of them for finishing the way they did," Gibson said. Redmond - Kalina,
